Plaque is a commonly used word when discussing dental health. Even though most of us have heard of this word, there a lot of people that don’t really know what it is.
Simply put, plaque is a film of sugar and bacteria that forms on our teeth throughout the day. In order to keep plaque under control, you should:
- Keep consumption of sugar, starch, and sticky foods to a minimum
- Brush your teeth twice per day
- Floss at least once per day
- Maintain regular trips to the dentist
However, plaque that is not removed can easily build up and form tartar. Tartar can’t be cleaned away from simply brushing and flossing. In order to treat tartar, Dr. Levine will need to perform a scaling and root planing procedure. If tartar is not removed, it can lead to gum disease and even possible tooth loss.
It is important to remember to practice proper dental hygiene and schedule regular trips to the dentist. The best way to know how to care for your mouth is to speak with Dr. Levine. He will be able to let you know what dental hygiene activities will benefit you in addition to brushing and flossing, such as using mouthwash or a tongue scraper, and how often you should come in for cleanings.
We are always welcoming new patients to our practice in Olney, MD. Feel free to schedule an appointment with Dr. Levine today!
